DC PROGRAMS, MONTH TWO: SPEAKERS, AWARDS AND MORE THIS JULY - 08/01/07

The month of July has been an exciting time for students of the Georgetown Institutes. In addition to their intense academic classes and internships, students have attended the annual Institute award celebrations.

The events allowed students to meet donors, distinguished alumni and the honorees and award recipients.

Here is a recap of the July events, Institute-by-Institute:

Institute on Business and Government Affairs
On Tuesday, June 26 the Institute on Business and Government Affairs hosted the 2007 Congressional Scholarship Award Dinner. Held at the Four Seasons Hotel, the celebration raised more than $190,000, which will be used to support IBGA. The event brought together students, lobbyists and legislators to honor Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.).

Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) praised Chambliss for his contributions to both the agricultural community and to the nation through his role in homeland security. Chambliss has represented the legal interests of farmers in Georgia and is chairman of the Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management.

Engalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems
The 13th Annual Judd Luncheon was held on Wednesday, July 11 at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Washington. The 2007 Walter Judd Freedom Award was presented to General Edward L. Rowny, Former Ambassador and LTG USA. The former U.S. Secretary of State (1981-1982), the Honorable Alexander Haig, also spoke at the luncheon.

Student David Ray of ICPES noted, “We are surrounded by people with different ideologies and backgrounds, but we all share something great in common; we’re all going to be leaders in our generation and TFAS is helping us do that.  We care so passionately about the future of not only this country, but of the world.”

Institute on Political Journalism
On Thursday, July 19, IPJ held its 12th Annual Journalism Awards Luncheon at The National Press Club. The Clark Mollenhoff Award for Excellence in Investigative Journalism was presented to Kathleen Carroll and Jean Rimbach of The Record in Bergen County, and the Economic Journalism Award was given to Steve Everly of The Kansas City Star. The Thomas L. Phillips Collegiate Journalism Award was given to Jason Parsley of the University Press at Florida Atlantic University. John Farley, trustee and chairman of the Board of Visitors at TFAS, spoke to students and testified that internships really can lead to a career.

• Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service
The Grant Award Luncheon for IPVS was held on Friday, July 27 at The Willard Hotel downtown. At the beginning of the summer, Institute students formed a fundraiser and grant making organization called SPEAK! (Students Promoting Educational Achievement for Kids). They held multiple fundraising events, including a yard sale and raffle. They voted on two grant proposals that best represented the message of their nonprofit organization: "To encourage the development of self esteem, educational excellence, cultural awareness and active citizenship in D.C.’s youth through community youth programming and direct service and financial aid." Grants of $1,065 each went to the Community Family Life Services and Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund.

In learning the ins and outs of non-profits, grants, and fund-raising, Holly Coats of IPVS said, “I will never forget what I’ve learned from the amazing people I’ve been surrounded by in IPVS - people who just want to make a difference in the world.”

In addition to the award banquets, all of the Institutes participated in the annual Embassy Day on July 13. Students attended a briefing at one of five embassies – Greece, Indonesia, Guatemala and Australia, as well as the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. The day concluded with a reception at TFAS Headquarters.

What is next for these busy students? Graduation! Commencement will take place on August 3 at Georgetown University, where the former Ohio Secretary of State and former U.S Ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Commission, the Hon. Ken Blackwell, will speak.
