Alumni Dominate National Best-Seller Lists

//////////////////////

This summer, TFAS alumni have conquered the best-seller charts. Current Novak Fellow Tim Alberta, Novak ’18, is #2 on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction list for his book “American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump.” Joining Alberta on the list’s top ten are Mark Levin ’76, whose “Unfreedom of the Press” was #5 last week and Mollie Hemingway, Novak ’04, who was right behind him at #6 with her book, “Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court.” Both Levin and Hemingway remain in the top ten this week, losing only one spot as Alberta’s book debuted at #2.

But the New York Times only hints at TFAS’s success: this week Levin’s book is #1 on the Publishers Weekly hardcover nonfiction bestsellers list, with Alberta at #2 and Hemingway at #4.  And over on Amazon.com, for the week of July 21, Alberta’s book is the site’s #3 best-seller, followed by Hemingway’s at the #5 spot and Levin at #8.

The success of our Novak Fellows and TFAS alumni in publishing this year shows how adept The Fund for American Studies is at identifying and developing talented journalists who can change the national conversation, and lead it. Whether they are current fellows, recent alumni, or went through the program a decade or more ago, journalists who have had the benefit of TFAS programs are at the top of their field, and the best-seller charts prove it.” – Daniel McCarthy, TFAS Journalism Fellowships Director

Also among the top-selling books on Amazon’s list of books about Christian saints is Colleen Carroll Campbell’s, Novak ’00, recently released book, “The  Heart of Perfection: How the Saints Taught Me to Trade My Dream of Perfect for God’s.”

These books come on the heels of several other published works by TFAS alumni that trended high on the best-seller lists, including Robby Soave’s, Novak ’17, “Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump,” Michael Brendan Dougherty’s, Novak ’09, “My Father Left Me Ireland: An American Son’s Search for Home,” and Timothy P. Carney’s, Novak ’03, “Alienated America: Why Some Places Thrive While Others Collapse.”

Both Alberta and Soave’s books are the direct result of their Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship projects, a TFAS program that provides essential funding and an extensive network of alumni to give promising journalists the resources to undertake career-building and impactful projects.

Alberta is chief political correspondent for Politico Magazine. Hemingway is senior editor of The Federalist and a contributor to Fox News Channel. Mark Levin is host of the nationally syndicated “Mark Levin Show,” as well as “Life, Liberty & Levin” on Fox News. Soave is an associate editor at Reason. Michael Brendan Dougherty is senior writer at National Review Online. Colleen Carroll Campbell is an award-winning author, former presidential speechwriter, and editorialist and columnist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Carney is commentary editor at the Washington Examiner and a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Carney was recently recognized by TFAS this spring with the Kenneth Tomlinson Award for Outstanding Journalism.

TFAS Journalism Fellowships Director Daniel McCarthy said, “The success of our Novak Fellows and TFAS alumni in publishing this year shows how adept The Fund for American Studies is at identifying and developing talented journalists who can change the national conversation, and lead it. To support TFAS journalism programs, please consider attending our 26th Annual TFAS Journalism Awards Dinner in NYC on Sept. 12, as we announce our 2019 Novak and Rago Journalism Fellows and celebrate the accomplishments of our past award recipients. Learn more at TFAS.org/JAwards19.
